Psoriasis Awareness Month

August is Psoriasis Awareness Month, which means it’s time to talk about this unfortunate skin disease! Contrary to popular belief, psoriasis is not simply a rash or something you can catch if you itch too much. It’s actually a genetic, immune-system related disease that causes disrupts the normal growth cycle of skin cells. Therefore, it is not contagious. Psoriasis currently affects as many as 7.5 million Americans, with 30 percent of that number also developing psoriatic arthritis. 33 percent of sufferers reported that their social interactions are impacted due to their disease, while 59 percent said that psoriasis is a problem in their everyday life.

While psoriasis can be painful and debilitating, luckily there are many different treatment options to help patients. Most treatments involve a combination of different methods unique to each patient. There is no cure for psoriasis, but many symptoms can be relieved or cleared up for years at a time. For any of our patients that suffer from psoriasis, we can offer medication assistance as well as wound measurements. If you are suffering from a particularly bad flare up, we can also communicate with your doctor to find a new treatment plan for you.
