While all vitamins are important, vitamin B-12 is especially crucial to you because of the role it plays in brain and blood health. It is generally found in animal-derived foods, such as liver, fish or eggs. Low levels of vitamin B-12 can lead to a number of dangerous conditions including:

  • Pernicious anemia
  • Memory loss
  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Mood swings
  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Poor memory
  • Mania and psychosis

Vitamin B-12 can be taken in a number of ways, including:

  • Injection
  • Sublingual
  • Patches
  • Oral

The medication your doctor prescribes for you depends on your condition and likelihood of side effects. If you require vitamin B-12 injections, your nurse will most likely administer them as an intramuscular injection.  There is a low risk of side effects from this procedure, but your nurse will monitor your condition to ensure your body accepts the treatment.
