Inflammatory Bowel Disease

Inflammatory bowel disease is an autoimmune disease in which your body’s immune system begins to attack elements of the digestive system. It presents a slew of unwanted symptoms including:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Severe cramps
  • Muscle spasms
  • Weight loss
  • Anemia

The main types of inflammatory bowel disease are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Unfortunately, there is no cure for this disease, but certain treatments help keep discomfort to a minimum:

  • Anti-inflammatory steroids
  • Immunosuppression
  • Bowel resection
  • Strictureplasty
  • Colostomy or ileostomy

Patients with this disease can live a healthy and happy life as long as they keep their symptoms under control and avoid trigger foods. Your nurse will teach you which foods may aggravate your symptoms, as well as the other risk factors involved with the disease. In addition, your nurse will care for your wounds after surgery.
