Are You at Risk for COPD?

Are You at Risk for COPD?

COPD, which stands for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, is a type of lung disease which inhibits your breathing abilities. This includes the diseases chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Ultimately, the disease worsens over time, making it progressively harder for you to breathe in a normal manner.

As COPD develops, less air is able to flow in and out of the airways of your lungs because of a loss of elasticity, destruction or hardening of the walls in between them, or an abnormal abundance of mucus. Unfortunately, the major cause of COPD is smoking, which means it is preventable in many cases.

Take the quiz below to test your risk of developing COPD. Although there is no cure for COPD, the best treatment is staying healthy and stopping the use of cigarettes. Those with a point score of greater than 2 on the quiz are at a greater risk of developing COPD. Those with a quiz score of 2 and under are not currently at risk for developing COPD.

National Home Safety Month

National Home Safety Month

June is National Home Safety Month, which is a month that closely resonates with our mission as a home health provider. All of our patients are homebound; therefore, we want them feel be safe and secure in their surroundings. It is part of our services to evaluate home safety when a nurse comes to visit because we do not want any accidents to occur that might further injure the patient.

However, it is important that our patients are educated on how to keep their home safe on a long-term basis. Injury or disability might make it harder for a person to move around their home, which greatly increases their fall risk. Many of our patients take multiple medications, which means they are at risk of an unintentional overdose. Simply tasks such as cooking can sometimes turn hazardous unless proper fire and burn protocols are followed.

Do you know how to stay safe in your home? Take our quiz to help educate yourself and spread home safety awareness!

National High Blood Pressure Education Month Quiz

National High Blood Pressure Education Month Quiz

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is a real threat, affecting about one in three Americans. It has become such a widespread epidemic that it is almost commonplace. People quickly forget that it greatly increases your risk of heart disease and stroke. In fact, over 360,000 deaths occurred in 2010 with high blood pressure as the primary or contributing cause.

That equates to 1,000 deaths each day.

It is important to monitor your blood pressure to make certain that it does not creep into the hypertension range. Many people are genetically disposed to high blood pressure and won’t be able to prevent it from happening. However, for most people, changing your diet and exercising regularly can lower your risk of developing high blood pressure.
